What is SIFE UNSW? Welcome to the Students In Free Enterprise University of New South Wales (SIFE UNSW) team website. SIFE is a global non-profit organisation active in 48 countries, which aims to create programs that provide economic opportunities for others.

SIFE at UNSW empowers individuals to make a difference in the local community and develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills along the way. We endeavour to present projects to address the growing shortage of business skills, education and employment opportunities amongst children, young adults and women within our community.
Indigenous Arts Bringing the culture of Australia's most marginalised group to the forefront by creating an art gallery for the Aboriginal people.

SIFEUNSW partners with disadvantaged Indigenous communities to run art expos whereby Aboriginal people can showcase and sell their indigenous art. By giving them a chance to be more entrepreneurial, they can achieve greater independence, and break the generational cycle of disadvantage.
EcoActive EcoActive is about bringing environmental awareness in a practical manner to both individuals and businesses. It has two sections:

The Community Garden Project:   SIFEUNSW is designing and managing sustainable community gardens for disadvantaged local urban communities

The Green Bean Project:   SIFE UNSW is establishing a reusable-cup discount on the UNSW campus and in Sydney's CBD to promote the environmentally sustainable concept of 're-use’.
Business IT Up SIFE UNSW is helping small businesses through a two part process.

SIFE UNSW is assisting small businesses market themselves through websites and social networking -- something which small businesses must keep in tune with else they will be left behind in the new decade.

SIFE UNSW is also consulting small businesses on their operations to improve the effectiveness of their most basic of marketing materials; the in-store media. SIFE UNSW tailors the material to suit clients using business savvyness and marketing knowledge to implement changes in small businesses.
Planet Hope SIFE UNSW is collaborating with not-for-profit organisations in order to make a tangible and sustained difference to the disadvantaged and marginalised members of our community, both locally and internationally. Currently we are collaborating with Kanga Schools to deliver basic literacy and numeracy aids to 15 primary schools (11,000 – 22,000 students) in Sierra Leone as well as a yet undetermined number of high schools. We are also working with the Australian Red Cross to create tutorials for the Parent Education section of their Young Parent’s Program covering the areas of employment, finances and organisation. We are currently liaising with a number of homeless agencies in order to create a project that will launch in January, 2011.

The Pakistan Floods are without question one of the largest humanitarian catastrophe of modern time, with over 15 million people now homeless.

If you are interested in making a small difference in helping the humanitarian effort of attending to the short and long-term needs of the displaced peoples in Pakistan, register here (http://pkfloods-sydney.eventbrite.com/) The CrisisCamp will be on the weekend of 4th and 5th of September. We will be going through a number of tasks that will help the aid agencies on the ground. These include:

  • Working with expatriate Pakistanis who can help you translate local terms and names of places for entry into the reports
  • Reading reports from relief agencies, identifying information about hospitals, shelters and schools and adding the data about their locations, capacity and other relief-related information to Sahana and OpenStreetMap
  • Tracing satellite imagery to add the location of roads and infrastructure
  • If you are an expat Pakistani who speaks Pushto, Seraiki, Sindhi or Panjabi come along and help find the names of remote villages.
  • Documenting lessons learned from the CrisisCamp to help others
  • Writing tools and software help automate the above tasks

Why organise this CrisisCamp?

In late July 2010 after an unusually wet monsoon across South Asia, substantial areas of Pakistan were flooded, affecting nearly a third of the country. UNOCHA has described the Pakistan Floods as a disaster surpassing the Boxing day Tsunami, Pakistan Earthquake and Haiti Earthquake combined in terms of the number of people affected and the social and economic destruction caused. Pakistan was already suffering socially and economically from the effects of the conflict in the region. Without help, this disaster could have untold long-term consequences for the future of the most vulnerable in Pakistan.

Who is organizing this camp?

To assist in the relief efforts, an enterprising team of volunteers and organisational supporters such as Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) at the University of New South Wales, and Drumbeat, an open web initiative of the Mozilla Foundation and the World Bank  are coming together on the weekend of September 4-5, 2010 in  CrisisCamp in Sydney, Australia. This event is sponsored by the CIE, World Bank and Arc.
